Fedora 28

So in August 2018 I took all 3 of my personal computers to Fedora 28. I’m liking it and here are the things I do to make it work for me.

Volume Group

While you’re doing the install and formatting the disks change the name of the “volume group” to just “vg”. I do this so when I “df -h” I get something short like:

/dev/mapper/vg-home 168G 54G 107G 34% /home

If you let the install pick you’ll sometimes get a longish “volume group” name like “fedora_localhost–live” which is just awful long to me.1

LaTeX

I use LaTeX to write and it working correctly is a must. It doesn’t have to work easily, after 20 plus years of using I expect some challenges.

How I install “texlive” is here.

Something (maybe some custom code I use) needed “perl’s Env” so I had to do (as root if it’s not obvious):

dnf install perl-Env

There’s a library “missing” from Fedora 28 and I had to install “libnsl” like (as root if it’s not obvious):

dnf install libnsl

  1. Then I complicated the matter and tried to “fix” using “vgrename” which was a bad idea and my laptop wouldn’t boot afterwards and I had to do a new install from a flash drive. This pissed me off.
